Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche is a key figure in Tibetan Buddhism who lived in the 8th century. He is credited for the first transmission of Vajrayana teachings from India to Tibet. He is regarded as one of the fathers of Buddhism in that region, and he is especially important to the Nyingma lineage. Therefore he is also a key figure in Shambhala Buddhism. His name means "Lotus Born".
