Gap

Gap is any discontinuity in our experience. These occur all the time, especially when we are startled or caught off guard. They are threatening to the ego process, because they undermine the sense of ego's solidity and continuity. These gaps are opportunities in a contemplative practice to see the discontinuity of experience and of ego and to see the unfolding chain reaction of consciousness in contrast.

In popular culture, the London subway system has informational signs that say "Mind the Gap" as a warning for people stepping between the platform onto a train. T-shirts with this signage will sometimes appear at meditation retreats.

The London Underground subway system has a number of warnings to passengers, introduced in 1969, to "mind the gap" between the train platform and trains. This phrase is sometimes spotted on t-shirts and mugs at meditation retreats as an appropriation. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_the_gap

Quotes

"Gradually, through meditation, we begin to notice that there are gaps in our internal dialogue. In the midst of continually talking to ourselves, we experience a pause, as if awakening from a dream. We recognize our capacity to relax with the clarity, the space, the open-ended awareness that already exists in our minds. We experience moments of being right here that feel simple, direct, and uncluttered." - Pema Chödrön
